NRCan cold-climate list

Yukon’s air-source rebates point at one list: NRCan’s cold-climate air-source heat pumps for Manitoba and Yukon. Here is how to read a row.

Last updated: October 17, 2026

Find the row, not the brand

The list is a database of matched systems: outdoor model, indoor model, and furnace model if there is one, tied to an AHRI or verification number. A brand being “known for cold weather” is not a row. Ask for the AHRI number on the quote, paste it into the search, and check that the indoor and outdoor model numbers match exactly. NRCan searchable list

What the columns mean

  • HSPF2. Heating seasonal performance. The cold-climate bar is at least 6.6. A higher HSPF2 on a brochure is the milder-climate figure and is not this test.
  • SEER2. Cooling seasonal efficiency. At least 15.2 for the cold-climate list.
  • Capacity maintenance. Maximum heating capacity at −15°C divided by rated heating capacity at 8.3°C. At least 70 percent.
  • COP at −15°C. At least 1.8, at maximum capacity. A COP of 1.8 means 1.8 units of heat out for 1 unit of electricity in, at that test point. It will be lower in deeper cold. It is not your seasonal bill.
  • Compressor. Variable speed, three or more steps, or continuously variable. NRCan

How Yukon uses it

For an air-source heat pump, the Dependable Grid dual-fuel rebate, the Good Energy heat pump rebate, and the Affordable Heat Pump Program all require the Manitoba-and-Yukon cold-climate list. A ground-source unit is on a different rule: ENERGY STAR, not this list. Terms
