Where “northern” starts, for these rebates
Better Homes draws the line at and north of the District of 100 Mile House, latitude 51.628°N, and the house has to be on BC Hydro service for the northern top-ups described on the program pages. Home Renovation Rebate Fort St. John and Prince George are north of that line. Whitehorse is not in the program. A Yukon Dependable Grid approval is irrelevant at a B.C. till, and a B.C. eligibility code is irrelevant at the Yukon Energy Branch.
Two programs, and a July 2026 change
The Home Renovation Rebate page, aimed at any income, lists heat pumps for electrically heated homes up to $4,000 anywhere in B.C., and separate northern amounts: up to $6,000 from oil, and up to $8,000 from natural gas or propane. Better Homes
The income-tiered Energy Savings Program changed on July 6, 2026. A June 29, 2026 FAQ says heat pump rebates for homes heated with oil, propane, or natural gas were reduced in all income levels, and that a grace period ran to July 31, 2026 for people who already had an eligibility code. FAQ For invoices on or after July 6, 2026, the requirements page lists central ducted and 3-head multi-splits at 100 percent of eligible costs up to $13,000, $7,000, or $3,500 depending on income level, with lower caps for smaller split systems. A northern top-up of $3,000 (or $1,500 on a single-head) is listed for income levels 1 and 2, and not for level 3. Requirements
BC Hydro’s October 2026 rebate table still shows a northern dual-fuel ducted amount, and it requires the thermostat’s outdoor switchover to stay at or below 2°C in the Southern Interior and northern B.C. for the life of the product. The Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island figure on that table is 5°C. BC Hydro table That 2°C lockout is a rebate condition. It is not the −20°C balance point in the Yukon terms, and it is not a claim that the heat pump should be switched off at 2°C for engineering reasons.
